Continental Walk for Disarmament and Social Justice Records

The Continental Walk for Disarmament and Social Justice was initated in 1974 to "call for disarmament, a simultaneous shift of economic priorities away from militarism and toward meeting domestic and global human needs, and removal of the causes of war." When the Walk ended on October 18, 1976 at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., walkers had covered 8,000 miles through 34 states.

Edward Hasbrouck was born in 1960 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1980, when registration for the draft was reinstituted, he refused to register. Hasbrouck worked with the National Resistance Committee and affiliated local organizations. In June 1983, he was put on probation because of his draft refusal and sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. The Peace Action Center began in 1961 as a continuation of the vigil at Fort Detrick, Md.
